Christians! Stop Being a Jerk on the Internet!

  • Dear Brothers and Sisters,

When you engage in online witnessing, please feel free disagree with and even debate people - without calling them names! It proves nothing and there's really no need for it.

I know many atheists personally and have witnessed to them up close and personal - and they often will listen. Many are still very young - so chill out a bit. Sure, they are 'foolish' in the Romans 1-2 sense (as all unbelievers are) but often they are very smart and still figuring things out - so give God glory ... and relax.

Calling people idiots does make them not overrun the Internet anymore - this is not even a logical solution, is it? Will calling people names make them disappear?

And the whole thing about "I speak seriously so you deserve to be treated as such", listen, we've gotta lay down our rights for this Gospel, man! Maybe we will be verbally abused and mistreated from time to time. We still must show love - like Christ on the cross - and still we must pray for these folks - as Jesus commanded.

I'm not claiming to always do this myself, obviously. But I sincerely ask you to reconsider how you treat people on the Internet - you are a Christian ambassador! Please hear me out my friends ... and please read over these verses:
    Colossians 4:5-6
Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.

    1 Thessalonians 5: 15
See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone.
  • 1 Peter 3: 9
Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing.

    1 Peter 3:15-16
Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame.
We Christians really have no excuse to act any other way. Please don't be offended when another believer approaches you about acting like a jerk. In fact, it seems many of you are not willing to make amends in the name of charity. If you just can't help it, I would prefer if you not post at all on the Internet - it is a bad witness. I do pray that all is well with you as you grow in grace.
