THE ORIGIN OF MAN
I believe the Triune God made man and woman on the sixth day of Creation (Genesis 1:24-31). I believe that God brought forth everything that exists ex nihilo (out of nothing) by Divine Fiat (he spoke it into existence) but that He fashioned man from the dirt (Genesis 2:7) and then made woman from the first man’s rib (Genesis 2:21). I believe that this first couple – Adam and Eve – were actual historical figures and that they were fully developed humans (Mark 10:6). Adam and Eve were created to rule over the earth as representatives of God’s greater rule.
THE IMAGE OF GOD
I believe that the Triune God created humankind in His image (Genesis 1:26-27). The image of God does not mean physical resemblance – for God is Spirit - but rather it means humankind has the ability to think rationally using logic and reason. I believe the image of God also means that we have an innate linguistic ability that no mere animal can ever posses. This mean we can have relationships and communicate both with our fellow humans and with God Himself. The image of God also has a moral capacity; this means we can choose between right and wrong. As Christians become more Christ-like, they represent the image of God more fully.
I believe that human beings are a dichotomy. This means we are comprised of two parts. The material part is invisible and is called the body; the immaterial part is invisible and is called the soul or the spirit (Matthew 10:28). The soul animates the body and is the center of consciousness and personality, which includes the intellect and will. At death, the soul is separated from the body but will once again reunite at the resurrection (I Corinthians 15:18-23).
THE ORIGIN OF THE SOUL
I believe that soul of a human is produced at the same time the body is formed; this means the human soul is generated naturally at conception. This helps explain the transmission of the sin nature. I believe this idea because God has ceased from His creative activity (Genesis 2:2) and because living beings are said to reproduce after their own kind (Genesis 1:12, 21, 25).
